The University of Maine Foundation has created the Hazing Prevention Research Lab, where Dr. Elizabeth Allan, world’s leading scholar of hazing prevention will be spearheading a new research project aimed at preventing hazing deaths and informing new legislation. The Stop Campus Hazing Act has officially been signed into law as of December 24, 2024. This bipartisan legislation, introduces groundbreaking measures to increase transparency, accountability, and prevention of hazing across U.S.
The Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA) requires colleges and universities to publicly report hazing incidents, adopt robust prevention policies, and maintain Campus Hazing Transparency Reports to ensure greater accountability.

Hazing was the 'breaking point' for WSU freshman who died by suicide, parents say
Sam's parents, Jolayne Houtz and Hector Martinez have been tireless advocates for change in hazing legislation and accountability following Sam's death at ATO in 2019.
Most recently, the Washington Court of Appeals has ruled a trial court errored last year when it dismissed a lawsuit against WSU for its role in a 2019 hazing death.
